Kenya HS 2022 Day 1

Hey hey hey!

After spending 18 hours on an airplane, and almost no hours sleeping, we finally made it! Our wonderful journey began when we took off from Denver for our lovely 10 hour flight. The squad hung out, ate snacks, and watched "Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse" for entertainment (boys included; Landon was very invested). Sadly, I don't think any of us got much sleep. When we arrived in Frankfurt, Germany, we had no idea the challenge we would soon behold...

When we landed, we got off our first plane, rode on a bus, hiked up and down many flights of stairs, sprinted through hallways, and rode yet another bus to get to our next plane, which we were some of the last to board. Long story short, we were in Germany for a lovely 17 minutes (according to Kirby). On our second flight, we enjoyed movies (Monsters Inc), sleep (Chloe got some solid sleep ), and food. One of our meals was a sandwich which had cheese, carrots, zucchini, and some sort of weird sauce. To put it simply, it was quite the taste bud teaser.

Soon enough, we made it to Nairobi!!! All of us were relieved to not be on a plane anymore. We headed to our hotel and we went settled into our rooms, showered (by far the best part of the day), and debriefed while snacking on fruit snacks, caramel M&M's, and other snacks mostly provided by Kendall and Jackson (he "brought the snacks out first"). We all quickly went to sleep, and most of us slept like babies all night long.

Saturday came and so did the best hotel breakfast in the history of the world. Not kidding, this may have been the best breakfast I've ever had in my life. Fruit, pastries, juice, waffles, bacon, and other Kenyan breakfast munchies. Everything was delicious including the passion fruit (which Chloe and Kendall slurped up stealthily) and the toffee syrup (which Kirby also slurped up stealthily). After munching on breakfast for a little while, we got our bags and headed out to meet our new best friend and van driver, Peter.

Peter zoomed us through the streets of Nairobi in his epic safari buggy towards the market where we would have lunch. We walked around, ate some pizza, and then drove out to Kijabe. Towards the end of the ride, we found ourselves on a very bouncy dirt road, and yet, somehow, Jackson slept through most of it. David also enjoyed the ride (my stuffed frog). When we finally arrived at the guesthouse near the hospital, we met Mary and Christine, our hosts! While the girls were settling into their rooms, they made some friends with the local softball-sized spiders, which Lindsay intelligently named Fredrick, Bill, Tessa, and Ned, and Kirby intelligently killed. Later, we walked up to the hospital to look around. We also worked on our skits and crafts for the week. We had a great conversation with Phoebe, a pastor and Cure employee. She talked about how, if we ask God to reveal His will for our lives, He will reveal it to us. After dinner, we had a wonderful debrief! Kendall shared her testimony and Chloe and Helmsley led us in worship! What a great first three days!

Thank you so much for your prayers!
