Greece Team #2
We served at the only church in the Xarchia region today. Alex and Tim, the pastors, started the church in 2014 to reach people in this anarchist neighborhood a very unreached population. Athens just opened for groups of 25 or more to meet so they are getting back to gathering in-person again. The worship was sweet and the encouraging message was from 1 Peter 1:1-12.
The churches current second floor location dates back to before 1866. It was renovated and opened in November 2019, just before Covid hit. They are now moving forward with a long term plan to provide housing for refugees from North Africa, the Middle East or Ukraine. We started cleaning and organizing clothing and bedding donations to sale and fund ministry for the refugees.
Our delicious lunch was prepared by a couple from Morrocco who fled their country because of their Christian beliefs. Even in the squatter home they lived in temporarily in Athens, they were persecuted for their religious stance. They are receiving assistance from the church, their new family. It was an inspiration to learn their story and hear them share about the hope they continue to have through Christ.
